BIO
Clemens Helmchen has worked as director of photography on many film projects. He has experience as an editor, photographer, director, DIT, data wrangler, colourist and 1st and 2nd camera assistant. Clemens grew up in Berlin, where in 2007 he got in touch with one of the first music video blog magazines called „Undertube“. On a moving subway he operated a handheld minidv-camcorder in his hands and started filming and editing interviews of diverse musicians as well as recommendations of the show.
To experience something other than Berlin, he moved to Hamburg in 2007. Between 2010 and 2014 he studied media technology (B. Sc.) at the University of Applied Science (HAW Hamburg) and specialized in camera and video technology. In Hamburg he became part of the professional film business as camera and editor assistant. In addition to student productions he got more experience as director of photography, editor and director with Kino cabaret productions. Kino cabaret is a world wide connected movement, that produces short movies in few days. An important experience for his photography projects was assisting the photographers Ingo Johannsen in Hamburg (2013-2014) and Felix Bassler in Stuttgart/Berlin (2014-2018).
In 2014, after an intership at Ludwig Kameraverleih Berlin (camera rental), he moved on to pick up his master studies in audiovisual media at the Media University (HdM) in Stuttgart. Beside student shorts he experimented with video content in theatre productions and developed his first video installation. Currently Clemens is working in Berlin and Europe-wide as director of photography, videographer, photographer, editor and technical assistant.
